Chapter Two---Still From the East! Jan: Just a few miles down the road and fighting wind and rain all the way. My hands grip the steering wheel so tightly that my arms begin to ache! Up ahead we can see flashing lights through the blowing rain.....what can it be? As we pass we see a semi blown off the road with the high winds. Maybe my little green GEO is really a gem after all! We get to the outskirts of St. Louis. There's the Mississippi River bridge. Becky sights the arch! Now which way do we go? Becky is reading the directions from Harriet....huh? Where is I-270? Where do we connect with I-64? Now pulling out the map and double checking. Oh we're going all the way through St. Louis on I-70! That explains it. We are both getting anxious now. We know we aren't far from Augusta, but we need to stop and get gas. Becky and I are talking as we climb out of the car. (Yes, you are right. We never really stopped!) The man at the gas station asks if we need to conference to pump the gas. He and Becky start chatting and discover he is from Findlay just a few miles down the road from Becky's home town! It's a small, small world. He chats with both of us and ends up even pumping my gas for me. When I go inside to pay for my gas I casually ask how much further it is to Augusta. A young man there gives me a puzzled look and asks, "Augusta, Georgia?" Becky and I climb back into the car for the last leg of our trip chuckling at his question! We pull back onto I-270 and finally find I-64. We turn left and can feel the pull of those strong wwwomen waiting for us in Augusta! Becky: Don't you remember when we got back in the geo and you tried to restart your car-even though it was already started and the guy with the 'Vette pumping gas laughed at us? :o) (or wasn't I suppose to tell that, lol!) Jan: After I had already started it! Guess you could say it was a case of talking too much again and not paying attention to what I was doing. I'm just glad that I could give someone that nice looking a good chuckle to start his weekend! lol! I'll probably get even before the story is complete, don't ya think Becky? lol! |
