Mother Theresa

by June

Let's not forget a woman of total compassion, inner strength, who had the capacity to provide pure love to everyone.

Mother Theresa was born in Skopje, Yugoslavia. She moved to India in 1928 where she taught school and took her final vows in 1937. In 1948 she left the convent to work alone in the slums of India, Calcutta mostly. She had medical training in Paris and had some classrooms to teach in Calcutta. Mother Theresa opened hospitals, orphanges and food centers. There is so little written about her which I find incredible. She accomplished so much and did so much for others and nothing for herself. Eventually other nuns began to join her. She opened the House for Dying in 1952. She started the Sisterhood of Missionaries of Charity in 1950. In 1957 she began working with lepers. In 1971 she received the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. I would be hard pressed to find anyone else who gave so much of themselves to so many and accomplished so much. She was truly a saint.
